This place is pure fantasy. The steep Rievaulx terrace and under it a valley crowned by the best monastery ruin you can imagine, great naves green with grass. It is one of those places you never forget. Arrive there from above, by the road through Helmsley, and leaving it from the other end of valley, via the narrow road to the wild woods. Think of those sturdy breathen who chose the setting for their serving place. They had it tough, but they did not lack the vision.
