O Little Town of Bethlehem edustaa valikoimassani transatlanttista suhdetta. Sanoittaja, Phillips Brooks, oli pesunkestävä jenkki, joka vieraili Pyhässä Maassa 1865 ja julkaisi parin vuoden päästä kaupunkipahaiselle omistetun viehättävän runon. Niin viehättävän, että virsinikkarinakin kunnostautunut Ralph Vaughan-Williams sovitti tekstin vanhan kansanballadin sävelmään Ploughboy's Dream, kyntöpojan uni, joka on peräisin Forest Greenista, Surreystä.
Sävelmä on oikeastaan pohjimmiltaan perusvirsi, mutta säkeet lomittuvat vaivattomasti. Tämä on suhteellisen helppoa esitettävää. Vaikka kaikki joululaulut ovat tietysti vaikeita sillä tavalla, että niissä on tradition ja tunteiden paino mukana. Yksikin väärä aksentti voi osua herkkään kohtaan. On varmasti myös tässä kohtaa paikallaan pyytää lukijoilta anteeksi, että 12 laulun valikoima on omani ja pystyisin sen tekemään ihan toisella tavalla perustellen toisennäköiseksi. Silloin mukaan valikoituisi täydellä varmuudella Arvoisalle Lukijalle Juuri Se Kaikista Rakkain Carol mukaan.
Vaughan Williams harrasti joulusävellyksiä enemmänkin, hänellä on myös Fantasia on Christmas Carols, joka muuten löytyy aiemmin suosittelemaltani On Christmas Night levyltä. En kyllä erityisemmin pidä juuri siitä teoksesta, mutta tulee jouluna kuunneltua monesti turhempaakin musiikkia. Mutta valintani numero 9 on Carol-ruisleipää: helposti laulettava, luottoteksti ja nimisäveltäjä. Sellainen kappale, jonka tunnistaa heti ja ihmettelee, että siihen ei sittenkään kyllästy. Tekstin maalailu on avain tähän - runon hiljaisuuteen tulee reagoida myös laulussa.

O Little Town of Bethlehem is a transatlantic co-operation work, fine text is born in the US (after Philips Brooks visited Bethlehem in 1865) and no less than RVW himself adapted the text to nice folk ballad from Forest Green, Surrey. Vaughan-Williams is no longer as popular he used to be, but he had some output in Carol genre as well. He made such a variety of hymns worth singing and this nice, ordinary, but beautiful piece is one of them. It is always good to have emphasis on folk and singfulness in this genre.
